Frequently Asked Questions

  • Being in the NICU is intense. While in the NICU, your baby was constantly monitored and surrounded by NICU care providers 24/7. Going home is the most exciting day, but often that joy is overshadowed by feelings of anxiety and overwhelm. You want to have the knowledge and skills to create an environment that your baby can thrive in, but don’t have the time to spend researching for hours. Whether with 1:1 coaching, in-person support groups, online communities or unlimited chat with a NICU professional- with The NICU Translator you don’t have to do this alone.

  • Before you go home from the NICU, you will likely receive discharge teaching. But often this education is generic, limited and brief. Your pediatrician will be there to answer your medical concerns, but appointments can be infrequent. Your friends and family may try to help and offer advice, but they might not understand what makes your NICU baby unique. Our offerings let you connect directly to NICU professionals as well as other NICU families who understand your experience and can help answer every question. When it comes to NICU babies, there is no such thing as too much support and love.

  • Yes! Not all NICU babies are preemies, in fact the majority are term infants. With over a decade of experience working in Level IV NICUs, Mary has experience working with families with a wide variety of diagnoses including HIE, congenital heart disease, BPD and many more. I believe all NICU families deserve extra love and support.

  • Most NICU stays are not expected and seeing your baby in an intensive care unit can be extremely traumatic. No one truly understands the NICU unless you have experienced it and you deserve a post- NICU experience supported by a NICU professional who can help answer your questions.

  • By working together 1:1, we can create a discharge support plan that is customized to your family and your unique baby. You will have direct access to me and I can answer any questions that you may have as you care for your NICU baby. These sessions are designed especially to support your first 6-10 weeks home from the NICU, but can be extended if desired. Many families prefer this individual protected time to share and connect.

In the β€œLife After NICU” membership, you get the benefit of connecting with a group of NICU families and professionals. You can post a question in the community, attend a live β€œAsk a NICU Nurse” Q&A session and attend β€œBaby School” where each month an expert teaches on a topic to help you thrive after the NICU. Many families graduate to β€œLife After NICU” after their 1:1 support sessions end and continue to find support as their NICU baby grows and develops in the months after discharge. But you can (and should!) join β€œLife After NICU” at any point before, during or after your NICU stay.

  • Facebook can be a powerful tool to connect with others, but it is hard to know who exactly is giving you information and advice. In β€œLife After NICU”, all community responses are moderated by a NICU professional who can ensure members stay safe and that the information shared is evidence-based.

  • Absolutely! Knowledge and community support are some of the best ways to combat the anxiety of a NICU experience. By joining before discharge you can better prepare yourself and your support system for navigating life at home.
